AVID

Welcome to AVID

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID's mission is to close the acheivement gap by preparing all students for success in a global economy. AVID strategies are seen school-wide in every classroom on PV's campus, and we also have a class which specifically focuses on AVID skills. We pride ourselves on building writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading skills in every one of our Titans. Our teachers facilitate learning, which results in an inquiry-based environment, while creating a student-centric classroom. We strongly believe we can raise the bar. We believe we need to accelerate our students. We believe the school is the center of every community.

AVID was started back in 1980, from one classroom of 32 students. Since then, AVID has served more than 2 million students in grades K–12 and 62 postsecondary institutions. AVID has made the dream of college a reality for countless individuals and is implemented in more than 7,000 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Department of Defense Education, Canada, and Australia.

Palo Verde High Magnet School has a theme of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). We believe that every 21st Century citizen should be STEAM literate, regardless of career path or choice, in order to be fully prepared for the future. AVID believes that students in STEM coursework must develop the inquiry and collaboration skills necessary to plan investigations, develop and use models, and contruct explanations through reasoning. Our PV teachers insist on rigor, and break down barriers related to enrollment and participation in STEM pathways.
